Personal inventory practice to assist with goal-setting and New Year's Resolutions

As another year ends and a new one begins, it is the time when most people reflect on the year that has just been and set new year’s resolutions to improve themselves and circumstances.

Back in 2012 I read a great motivational blog from www.greatday.com, on taking a personal inventory in order to set goals and I have found this such a wonderful practice and hope you do as well.

To begin, list your accomplishments, what you did well and made a significant difference in your own life or the lives of others. Then write down the details of these experiences.

Next, compile a list of your skills and your expertise. These are things that you can do or know about more than the average person. Look at your hobbies, the books and magazines you read, the tasks you enjoy at work, the things you are interested in.

Here are some questions to include to ask yourself that will help in your personal inventory process

  • What have you accomplished this year?

  • What hobbies, clubs, sports, committees, activities are you currently involved in?

  • How much time do you spend on each of these items?

Congratulations, you have made your own personal inventory! Now that you have your personal inventory and have identified what is in alignment with your life purpose (hint, if you are doing it out of obligation or it doesn’t bring you any joy it isn’t), you are ready to set your goals.

To make your goals it may help you to group your goals according to the different domains of life, including financial, health, career, family, and social. A good goal is Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic, and Timely (S.M.A.R.T.). You may like to break them up into short term and long-term goals. Once you have your goals, put them in a place you see them daily, review them often and take steps to achieve them.
