The sensory nervous system
The nervous system is the main controlling system of the body and acts to maintain homeostasis, it does this by the sensory nervous system (SNS) sending nerve impulses to provide information to the central nervous system (CNS) about changes in the body that may harm it, including pain, pressure and temperature.
These changes are analysed by the nervous system and some form of action takes place in response, such as muscles contracting to remove your hand from the hot cup.
It is in this way that the sensory nervous system plays an important role in the survival of the individual, allowing awareness of both the internal and external environment.
